5 MEXICAN PAINTERS 1

Mexican Art has been an international reference for the last century. There are several important Mexican artists. In LeArtem we are proud of publishing some fact of these Masters that have contributed to our culture, history and art. In this blog we will give a quick reference of only five of these wonderful artists. In further articles we will publish some others.

JOSE CLEMENTE OROZCO Painter

Born: 1883
Died: 1949
Relevant facts: Muralist. Painted Pre – Hispanic rituals, cultural origins of indigenous people from Eastern Mexico, the Mexican Independence fight.
Artwork: Prometeo, El hombre en llamas, Dioses del mundo moderno, Bombardeo en picado y tanque, Katharsis, Zapatistas.

DAVID ALFARO SIQUEIROS Pinter

Born: 1896
Died: 1974
Relevant facts: Muralist. Dynamic style. Bright colors expressing intense emotions. Combining Mexican tradition with Surrealism and European Expressionism.
Artwork: El Nacimiento del Fascismo, Eco de un grito, Death of the Invader, The March of Humanity, Peasant Mother, The Elements, Struggle for Emancipation, Retrato de la Burguesía.

RUFINO TAMAYO Painter

Born:  1899
Died:  1991
Relevant facts: Zapotec. Combined Cubism and Surrealism. Reflected the Mexican pop culture charged with symbolism. Participated at Venice Biennale 1950.
Artwork: Watermelons, Three People, Luna y Sol, Mujer en gris, Women of Tehuantepec, Moon Dog, America, Dualidad.

FRIDA KAHLO Painter

Born: 1907
Died: 1954
Relevant facts: A lot of self-portraits as analyses of the identity, the genre, and the post-colonialism in the Mexican society of the XX century.
Artwork: Las dos Fridas, Diego y yo, Frida y Diego Rivera, Hospital Henry Ford, La columna rota, El ventado herido, Autorretrato con collar de espinas, El marco, Autorretrato con pelo corto.

AURORA REYES Painter

Born: 1908
Died: 1985

Relevat facts: Considered the first Mexican woman muralist. She created seven monumental art pieces, located in Mexico City. Her themes reflected working women, women peasants. She also was a poet and censored by the Mexican government.
Artwork: Atentado a las maestras rurales; La visión utópica de la historia; El padre nuestro, Cuauhtémoc.
